You see them at all games. They are the three individuals carrying either
a whistle or a flag. Their uniforms up until recently were black but now
referee fashions include red, gold, silver, or teal. They are the referees
or more correctly the referee and the assistant referees. Referees are
an integral part of the game of soccer. Their primary functions are to
ensure that the laws of the game are followed and that the safety of the
player is ensured.
Referees are proud of their contribution to soccer and take their appointments
seriously. Their basic requirements are: an understanding of the spirit
and the letter of the laws; superior physical condition; cooperation with
fellow officials; personal flexibility that allows for a totally unemotional
approach to all decisions despite experiencing a variety of participant
emotions during a typical game; and to make the game of soccer enjoyable
to play and watch. For those referees who also play the game, it gives
a new perspective of the game and a better understanding of the rules
from a different viewpoint.
The curriculum at these clinics teaches the particular aspects of soccer
officiating for individuals involved in the recreational program. Candidates
fulfilling the requirements of these clinics will be registered with USSF
and receive a USSF Grade 9 Badge allowing them to officiate recreational
youth games up to the Under 14 age group.
The R9 clinic uses "The Myths of the Game Video" to teach
individuals the essentials of officiating soccer. Training on the field
is provided to cover all aspects needed to actually referee a game. Attendees’
direct participation prepares them for actual game officiating.
Emphasis is placed on:
Law Five - The Referee
Law Eleven - Off Side
Law Twelve - Fouls and Misconduct.
What's different with the R9 clinics than other clinics? Role-playing
exercises are extensively used to examine how to deal with coaches and
parents who dissent or otherwise affect the ability of the referee to
manage the game. These exercises are great fun and have proven very effective
in teaching the essential tools of game management.
The 8-hour course for kids and adults 10 years or older provides for
both classroom and field instruction on the basic Laws of the Game and
in group participation in situations likely to confront the new referee.
Brea Soccer will be holding their clinic on Saturday July 19th at the
Brea Junior High School Cafeteria from 8:30 till 4:30 PM. Make sure you
wear comfortable summer clothing with tennis shoes for when we role play
outdoors, bring plenty of water and have a hat or sunscreen available
in case of excessive heat. We will break for lunch so bring money for
food or bring a sack lunch.
For those not in the city of Brea, the cost of the class is $50 to be
paid on the day of the class. This is a great opportunity to make some
money, build self confidence, learn a job skill and better understand
the game of soccer.
I will email a reminder to all participants in early July regarding
the camp date. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact
me at 714-255-0690 or email me at referees@breasoccer.org.
See you on July 19th……………..

Referee Program R-8
This two day class is given throughout the year and certifies you to referee
any youth soccer game in the United States. Referees can work any club,
signature or Rec game up to the age of 19. Brea works with Cal South to
send those people interested in upgrading their R-9 license. The cost
of the class is sponsored by Brea soccer and repaid by officiating 2 games
in Brea once you become certified. Go to CYSA.com to find the right time
and nearest class for you.
Referee Requirements
Referees must be at least 10 years old. All referees interested in officiating
as center referee must be at least R9 certified. AR’s do not have
to be certified but priority for assignments will go to those more qualified.
You must be at least 2 years older than the game you are officiating to
do the center referee position.
Referee Game Sign ups
Games for the week are posted at Yahoo.com for those interested in officiating.
Only approved referees have access to the group. To become a member of
the Brea Soccer Referee group you must first join Yahoo (it’s free),
then go to the BSA referee site to get approved. We can help you get started
if you have problems. Contact Steve Perry at sp5903@aol.com
when you are ready to join.
Referee Attire and Equipment
All referees must wear approved FIFA shirts and own a whistle and a set
of flags. Referees must be at the field 15 minutes prior to kick off ready
to check in players.
Referee Payments
All referees are paid on a voucher system. These vouchers are located
at the snack shack at the junior high. Please fill them out and turn them
back in before you leave the field. Pay checks are done every other week
and are available at the snack shack. All vouchers are checked against
the game cards to make sure the proper referees are compensated.
